A System for Diagnosing Precancerous Brain Conditions Has Been Patented in Perm

The scientists from Perm State Medical University and Perm Polytechnic University have made a breakthrough in the field of early diagnostics of brain tumors. They patented the system of predicting tumors of frontal lobe.

In the base of technology lies a complex approach that combines the collection of anamnesis and the research of precentral cerebellum of the brain with MRI system. The anesthesiologist studies the patient’s life history, considering all the necessary details: living in the zones with high background radiation, the presence of chronic illnesses, hereditary predisposition to oncological diseases, and the character of pre-existing neurological disorders. Special attention is paid to such symptoms as headaches, coordination disorders, memory problems, and  increased intracranial pressure.

After that, the doctor analyses the MRI data. The measurements are taken both in the left and right brain hemispheres. In the process of analysis, 12 key parameters are determined: width and thickness of brain cortex in different zones of the precentral gyrus. The received data is compared to reference values, considering age and sex of the patient.  The presence of deviation from the norm of two or more parameters, combined with at least one of aforementioned risk factors, indicates the high probability of tumor devolepment in the frontal lobe.

Frontal lobe is the biggest part of the brain responsible for many vitally important functions, such as desicion making, social behavior, and movement control.  Frontal lobe tumors usually develop slowly and asymptomatically. They are often discovered on the late stages when the treatment gets more difficult. The new technology allows to detect pathological changes in early stages, giving doctors information on the possible localization of future growths.

The achievement of Perm scientists gives a new perspective in the fight against brain tumors.
